“Being a woman is only a strength and never a weakness. If you really have the aspiration to succeed, you can get rid of all the biases that exist in the society. Our biases based on faulty belief systems hold us back – there is no other force which can hold us back. If you believe that you can do it, then you can do it!”

Ms. Debaleena Biswas was born in Kolkata, to Mr. Arunabha Biswas, a Corporate Legal Professional and a Company Secretary and Mrs. Krishna Biswas. Debaleena completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University. She was never bound to societal biases towards women. She worked as a summer trainee in Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. during her Bachelor’s.
Debaleena went on to work as a Process Engineer at Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd., a fully owned ONGC subsidiary. Plant visits and onsite training were a part of her regular schedule at MRPL, and she, like any other GET, did face her share of difficulties, but she never felt it was specific to her being a woman. She never shied away from her responsibilities in this role. As a part of her training and inspection duties, she had to perform physically challenging tasks like climbing steep ladders that were 10-15 meters high and enter vessels like Separators and Distillation towers, which is something that isn’t taught at the college. It was her hunger for knowledge and her passion that kept her going. She says, “These difficulties were surely not stronger than my urge to learn in my career”.
